Myles felt as though his feet barely touched the ground as he moved across the parking lot to his truck. Karen had liked his poem, and he could tell it had struck exactly the right note. The fact that Brant had helped him type it up and organize his thoughts didnât matter. The heart and soul of the poem had been all him, and Karen had loved every word.
He might not be able to read a book with the ease and speed that she could, but he could speak her language and make her happy.
He turned back to where Karen was sitting in her car, windows down.
âYou know youâre going to need a dress for the dance?â he called.
âI have one.â She leaned an elbow on the frame of the car door, her eyes still sparkling from the poem and the kisses that had followed before they started getting catcalls from football players and fans leaving the area.
âDoes it have buttons?â he asked, returning to her car.
She started to speak, then closed her mouth.
He opened her door and held out his hand. âCome on, tonightâs game was an early one. I betcha the mall is still open in San Antonio.â They would spend more time driving there than in the stores, probably, but the woman had worked so hard on this event she deserved to look gorgeous for it.
âThere are other things we should be doing to get ready,â she said, even though she placed her hand in his. âAnd we wonât get there before closing.â
âIâll drive fast.â He caught her look. âOkay, Iâll stay close to the speed limit.â
âMyles!â
âThe mall Iâm thinking of is open late tonight.â
âHow do you know?â
âAccording to the radio thereâs a pre-pre-Black Friday event going on, which means we have until midnight.â
âI donât knowâ¦â
âYouâve been working hard all week, and you deserve some fun. Weâll stop at the diner and get milkshakes to go, listen to loud music and let our hair down for a few hours. We can get all the stuff on your list done tomorrow.â
She was obviously considering. âAnd what are you going to wear to the dance?â
He shrugged. âIâm a dude. It doesnât matter.â
She tipped her chin upward. âMaybe it matters to me.â
âIâll wear what I wore to the last barn dance.â
Karen narrowed her eyes as she followed him toward his truck, after rolling up the windows and locking her car. In Sweetheart Creek it would be safe, the only concern being that someone might worry about her if the vehicle was left for too long.
âWhat was with that outfit, anyway?â Karen asked.
âJust felt like doing something different.â
âTo get my attention?â she asked. He didnât reply. âYou did look handsome.â
âWhy do I feel as though youâre going to add âbutâ to the end of that compliment?â
âThere isnât one.â
âThere is.â He could feel it.
âBut nothing. Iâm starting to gain a fondness for cowboys, thatâs all.â
He felt a smile crack his face. âThen I know exactly what to wear.â
âWhat?â
âA surprise.â
She was about to climb into his truck, but stopped, hand on the door handle.
